Here's the update on our harassment policy. Thanks for all your input. We should have our official policy out in the next 30 days, so you'll be hearing more about this.
We feel it is important to update you on the status of our harassment policy. Although we already had harassment policies in place (i.e. Cosplay is Not Consent, Volunteer Harassment Policy for volunteers and fans) we felt the need to create a universal harassment policy covering everyone involved in all aspects of the event. The policy not only will help educate people on the types of things that are considered harassment, it will also educate people on how to respond and report as needed. To that end:
✳️ We have been getting professional legal advice to specifically update our universal harassment policies. This process began last year after our September show. We are updating and expanding our harassment policy to apply to all aspects of the convention including, staff, volunteers, attendees, vendors and guests.
✳️ We are reviewing policies from other conventions and consulting with other promoters in the industry.
✳️ We are updating our FAQ on harassment to go beyond cosplay and bullying.
✳️ We are updating the section on harassment in our volunteer manual to include the universal policy.
✳️ We are adding new training procedures to train staff and volunteers specifically on our the updated universal policy.
✳️ We are including suggestions for helping people speak up against harassment.
✳️ We are clarifying the proper channels to lodge complaints including an anonymous reporting mechanism.
✳️ We are forming a committee to review allegations and to make decisions on how to proceed on allegations.
Complaints of harassment associated with our events are taken seriously. As a company we are not able to publicly disclose details regarding actions taken in response to specific complaints but we do review all complaints and take actions ranging from warnings to expulsion from our events even involving law enforcement if warranted. The key to the success of this policy will be education and that is the area we will focus most on.
We invite your feedback. We are not always able stop harassment but we can make efforts to increase education and set policy in effort to help reduce it. FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention is committed to continue to improve our efforts and processes to create an environment with a safe and respectful culture. Thanks to your support we have had five great years and look forward to many more to come together.
